Vera Wang was born and raised in New York city and is of Chinese descent. After graduating high school, Wang attended the University of Paris and Sarah Lawrence College where she earned a degree in art history. Vera Wang's first love was not fashion, but figure skating! Wang was a serious figure skater and even competed in the 1968 U.S. Figure Skating Competition. When Wang failed to make the U.S. Olympic team, she decided to enter into the fashion industry.

By 1970, Wang had worked her way up to senior editor at Vogue. After she was turned down for the editor-in-chief position, she began to work for Ralph Lauren as a design director. In 1990, Vera Wang opened up a bridal salon where she could feature her own gown designs! Wang's trademark bridal gowns were first sold in New York, New York out of the Carlyle Hotel. Today, Wang has expanded her bridal business and has storefronts in New York, London, Tokyo and Sydney, Australia.

Vera Wang's designs encourage women to explore their femininity through fashion and to have fun while doing so! Wang roots her designs in the classics and hopes that they will become timeless designs, treasured for an eternity. Today, Wang is known as the most sophisticated, distinguished, and fashion-forward bridal designer around the world. While Wang is mainly known for her wide range of haute couture bridesmaid gowns and her high-end wedding gown line, she has also launched two collections that make her designs more affordable for Vera lovers everywhere. She has expanded her label and become a household name, partly through her fragrance, jewelry, eyewear, shoe and houseware collections. Wang launched a line at David's Bridal in 2011 called 'White by Vera Wang' that allows brides to wear a Vera Wang design for $600-$1,400. Wang also has a diffusion line at Kohl's called 'Simply Vera' where she exclusively sells her home fashions. Wang believes that no matter how much something costs, everyone should be getting something that looks amazing.
